Add Creative Magic to Your Holiday Gatherings with a Family Talent Showcase!

The holiday season is the perfect time to add extra sparkle to your family gatherings by hosting a special in-home performance (or art show, poetry reading, etc.) starring your kids!

Whether it’s playing an instrument, performing a magic trick, or showing off original art in a mini-gallery, these personal showcases create unforgettable memories for your family and guests AND boost kids’ confidence.

At the Meridee Winters School of Music, we’ve encouraged our students to host in-home concerts for many years, knowing that family gatherings provide the ultimate built-in supportive audience. Relatives are already gathered, excited to celebrate, and eager to cheer on young performers. (In fact, our student assignment journals have templates for concert invitations and programs, and our teachers are trained in how to make amazing in-home shows!)

How to Create a Holiday Family Talent Show:

  1. Pick a Celebration: Whether it’s Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year’s Eve, or a holiday dinner, choose a special occasion when loved ones are gathered.
  2. Set the Stage: Decorate the living room, string up some holiday lights, and create a cozy performance space.
  3. Plan the Program: What talents will you be spotlighting? Music students can pick some favorite simple holiday songs, while other kids may choose to do skits, magic tricks or showcase artwork. (Bonus: Add a family sing-along for extra fun!)
  4. Invite the “Audience”: Even if it’s just for grandparents and cousins, send fun, festive invitations.
  5. Add Festive Touches: Make programs, bake treats, and dress up in holiday outfits or costumes.

Why It’s Worth It:

For our students, we know that every performance helps kids grow as musicians and performers. Having a supportive, familiar audience helps ease stage fright while giving kids a chance to shine. When pursuing a skill like art or music, encouragement like this can keep motivation high and help propel kids forward in their studies. (Plus: worried about lulls in the conversation? An adorable grade schooler playing Jingle Bells may be just what your party needs!)

Whatever you choose to do for your showcase, we’re sure it will add to the joy of the holiday. Have fun creating, and we hope you have a magical time connecting with family and sharing the season. As the saying goes, “there’s no place like home for the holidays” … and also for holiday concerts.
