Halloween is known for its costumes and candy… but we think it’s also an amazing holiday for something else: creativity. Every October, the world transforms into a playground of imagination, with pumpkins carved into glowing faces, houses draped in cobwebs, and kids (and adults!) stepping into brand new characters for a night. It’s the perfect time of year to remind ourselves just how powerful creativity can be, whether it shows up in art, stories, music, or beyond.

Costumes as Creative Expression
One of the most exciting parts of Halloween is deciding what to be. Costumes give us a chance to stretch our imaginations—whether that means crafting a handmade superhero cape, inventing a one-of-a-kind pun costume, or putting a spooky twist on a classic character. It’s creativity you can wear, and it encourages people of all ages to think outside the box. (Our students have extra fun matching their costume to their song at our annual Halloween Show.)
Halloween Art and Atmosphere
From pumpkin carving to DIY decorations, Halloween is full of opportunities to create. (We just saw an awesome idea of making gingerbread haunted houses complete with spooky black-icing-spiderwebs). Kids can experiment with paint, glue, glitter, and recycled materials to make monsters, magic wands and other inventions that reflect their personalities. Even the way we decorate our homes (silly vs. spooky vs. stylish) is a form of creative self-expression.
Storytelling in the Spirit of Spooky
What’s Halloween without a good ghost story? Whether you’re writing your own haunted tale or telling your own version of a spooky (or silly) story around a flashlight, this holiday encourages us to flex our storytelling muscles. Storytelling is not only fun, it’s also an important learning skill for kids—helping them build language, imagination, and confidence. It’s a reminder that imagination has the power to entertain, connect, and inspire.

Creativity at Meridee Winters School of Music
At Meridee Winters School of Music, we know creativity isn’t just for October—it’s for every day of the year (although we sure do love October lessons!). Our music lessons are built around fun, inventive approaches that turn learning into an adventure. During Halloween, that might look like spooky-sounding improvisations, eerie storytelling paired with piano playing, or composing brand new magical and enchanted songs.
And of course, our students get to showcase their creativity at our Halloween Show on October 25th. It’s a fun-filled event where families can see just how imaginative music lessons can be, with performances that are festive, inventive, and full of personality.
Happy (Creative Halloween)
So this Halloween, as you’re carving pumpkins or planning costumes, take a moment to celebrate the joy of creativity—and remember, it’s something we can nurture every single day. Want to see creativity in action? Join us at the Halloween Show or see it year-round with our music lessons. Have a happy Halloween… and don’t be afraid to get creative with it. After all, there’s nothing spooky about creativity…
